On the southwestern border of NC, southwest of Asheville; organized Feb 15, 1861 from Jacksonville and Henderson counties. Name Origin: From Latin trans plus sylva 'across the woods.' The name may also echo that of the province of Transylvania, now in Rumania, but more probably it is literary or promotional name.
