tolling

A suspension of a statute of limitations time period. In adverse possession, the time period may be tolled while the record owner is a minor child and unable to bring a lawsuit to oust trespassers in possession of his or her property. Parties in disputes often contractually agree to toll all applicable statutes of limitations while they pursue negotiations; otherwise a rapidly approaching expiration date would force them into litigation just to avoid loss of valuable rights.
