vampire tap

vampire tap

(networking, hardware)A device to connect a network node toan RG8 thick ethernet cable without affecting otherconnected nodes.

A vampire tap has an interface box with a "V" shaped groovealong one side. A sharp needle protrudes from the center ofthe groove. The cable is clamped into the groove by a groovedplate held in position by two thumb screws. With sufficientpractise, tightening the screws forces the needle through thecable jacket and into contact with the cable's center wirewhile other spikes bite into the outer conductor. Theinterface box has a 15 pin connector to connect to the networknode.

The vampire tap is often built into the transceiver, with amore flexible multi-wire "drop cable" to connect thetransceiver to the node.

vampire tap

A cable connection that is made with a unit that clamps onto and "bites" into the cable, hence the vampire name. Vampire taps were used to attach thick Ethernet transceivers to the coaxial cable. Without a vampire tap, the cable had to be cut and connectors had to be attached to both ends. See 10Base5. See vampire device.
