Sclerophyll (also sclerophyte), a stiff-leaved, drought-resistant dicotyledonous plant. The stiffness of the leaves and stems results from the presence of strongly developed mechanical tissues, which prevent wilting when there is a water deficiency. Sclerophyll herbaceous plants include the spiny clotbur of the family Compositae and the eryngo of the family Umbelliferae. |
