Simon Hollósy

Hollósy, Simon

Born Feb. 2, 1857, in Máramarossziget, now Sighet, Rumania; died May 8, 1918, in Técsö, now Tiachev, Transcarpathian Oblast, Ukrainian SSR. Hungarian painter.

From 1878 to 1882, Hollósy studied at the Academy of Arts in Munich; in 1886 he became director of the Kunstschule in Munich. In 1896 he founded an artists’ colony in Nagybánya (now in Rumania). Enriching Hungarian tradition with the achievements of Western European plein-air painting, Hollósy produced genre scenes of folk life and works with revolutionary motifs (for examples, the sketches for the painting Rákóczi March 1890–1920, Hungarian National Gallery, Budapest).
