Simmons, (Aloysius Harry) Al (b. Aloys Szymanski)

(1902–56) baseball player; born in Milwaukee, Wis. During his 20-year career as an outfielder (1924–44), primarily with the Philadelphia Athletics, he posted a lifetime batting average of .334 and hit 307 home runs. Nicknamed "Bucketfoot" because he tended to stride away from a pitched ball, he was elected to baseball's Hall of Fame in 1953.
