Tuman
Tuman
an escort vessel of the Soviet Northern Fleet, converted from a fishing trawler. On the morning of Aug. 10,1941, the Turnan was patrolling near Kil’din Island. Armed only with two 45-mm guns, it was suddenly attacked by three fascist German destroyers. The Turnan, with Senior Lieutenant L. A. Shestakov as captain and Senior Political Leader P. N. Strel’nik as military commissar, entered into unequal battle, and was unable to communicate with command echelons because of a damaged radio antenna. Despite fire and extensive damage to the ship, the crew fought heroically to the end. They were led by the first mate, Lieutenant L. A. Rybakov, who took command after the captain was killed. Survivors from the Turnan were later rescued by Soviet cutters.
