TuluTulua people in India. The Tulu inhabit the Tuluva District in the western part of Tamil Nadu State and adjacent regions in the states of Karnataka and Kerala and in the southern part of Maharashtra State. According to the 1971 census, the total number of Tulu is 1,157,000. The Tulu language belongs to the Dravidian family. The official religion of the Tulu is Hinduism, but other old beliefs, such as the worship of various demons, are widespread. Features of a primitive communal system and a matrilineal system of inheritance are preserved in the customs of the Tulu. The occupations of the Tulu include the cultivation of coconut palms, the collection of palm sap, the processing of coconut fibers, and the manufacture of copra products.
