Ples
a city (since 1925) in Furmanov Raion, Ivanovo Oblast, RSFSR, on the high right bank of the Volga River, 18 km from the Privolzhsk railroad station. Pies has repeatedly served as a source of inspiration for Russian landscape painters, including I. I. Levitan. Architectural monuments include the Uspenskii Cathedral (1747) and the Troitskaia (1808), Voskresenskaia (1817), Varvary (1821), and Preobrazhenskaia (1849) churches. There is a picture gallery in the former Voskresenskaia Church. The house museum of I. I. Levitan is in Pies. The city also has a sovkhoz technicum.
