Toktogul Reservoir

 

a reservoir formed by the dam of the Toktogul Hydroelectric Power Plant on the Naryn River, Osh Oblast, Kirghiz SSR. Filling of the reservoir began in 1974. The reservoir covers an area of 284 sq km and has a volume of 19.5 cu km. It is 65 km long and 12 km wide at its widest point; depths average 69 m, with a maximum depth of 180 m. The level of the reservoir fluctuates by as much as 63 m. The Toktogul Reservoir makes possible the long term regulation of the Naryn’s water flow while increasing the dependable water supply available for irrigated areas from 75 to 90 percent. It permits the additional irrigation of about 0.5 million hectares of land.
