Teimuraz II

Born 1700; died 1762 in St. Petersburg; buried in Astrakhan. King of Kakhetia and of Kartli.

Teimuraz was king of Kakhetia from 1733 to 1744. In 1744 he became king of Kartli and ceded Kakhetia to his son Erekle II, who virtually unified Eastern Georgia. Attempting to unify Eastern Georgia, Teimuraz skillfully consolidated his power with the aid of Nadir Shah. Essentially pro-Russian in his foreign policy, he went to St. Petersburg in 1761 to persuade the Russian government to support Eastern Georgia against Iran. He failed to attain his goal, since Russia was involved in the Seven Years’ War (1756–63).
