Established: 1937.
Location:Just south of the Minnesota border, about 50 miles west of Mason City, Iowa.
Facilities:Viewing sites, trails, auto tour route.
Activities:Fishing, hiking, hunting, educational programs.
Special Features:Refuge name is derived from the connection or "union" of two watersheds: the Blue Earth River of Minnesota and the East Fork of the Des Moines River. The terrain is nearly flat, allowing the flow of the water to be determined by the direction of the wind at times. Refuge is a major producer of wood ducks, with approximately 2,500 hatched annually.
Habitats: 3,334 acres of open water, marsh, uplands, riverine bottomlands and woody vegetation.
Access: Open during daylight hours. Some portions close seasonally; contact refuge office.
Wild life: American white pelicans, great blue herons, mallards, bald eagles, white-tailed deer, ring-necked pheasants, raccoons, and muskrats.
