Ukmerge
a city and administrative center of Ukmergé Raion, Lithuanian SSR. Situated on the SVentoji River of the Neman River Basin, 36 km northeast of the Ionava railroad station on the Radviliskis-KaiSiadorys line; located at the intersection of the Panevézys-Vilnius and Kaunas-Daugavpils highways. Population, 25,000(1976).
Industrial enterprises in Ukmergé include the Vienybés Plant, which manufactures rings and valves for compressors, refrigeration installations, and other machines. The city also has a furniture combine, a repair shop, a plant for the production of motor vehicle parts, a butter plant, and a flax-processing plant. It has a factory of the Lelija Garment Association and a lumber and timber distribution establishment. The city has a museum of local lore and a technicum for the mechanization of agriculture. Ukmergé was founded in the early 13th century.
