It fumes in air and dissolves freely in water. Pyrrolidine is a strong base; it is oxidized to γ-aminobutyric acid by chromic acid. Pyrrolidine is prepared commercially by hydrogenation of pyrrole or succinimide. The pyrrolidine ring forms a structural molecular fragment of many biologically active substances, including proline, nicotine, cocaine, and certain other alkaloids.
