Rezh

 

a city under oblast jurisdiction and administrative center of Rezh Raion, Sverdlovsk Oblast, RSFSR. Located on an eastern slope of the Central Urals, on a man-made lake and the Rezh River (Ob’ River basin). Station on the Sverdlovsk-Tavda railroad line, 89 km northeast of Sverdlovsk. Population, 34,000 (1974). Rezh has a nickel plant, a clothing factory, and enterprises of the woodworking and construction materials industries. There is an agricultural technicum in the city. Rezh was founded in 1773 in connection with the construction of a metallurgical plant; it became a city in 1943.


Rezh

 

a river in Sverdlovsk Oblast, RSFSR, a right fork of the Nitsa River of the Ob’ River basin. The Rezh is 219 km long and drains an area of 4,400 sq km. It is formed by the confluence of the Aiat’ and Bol’shoi Sap rivers, which originate on the eastern slopes of the Central Urals. The Rezh is fed primarily by snow. Its average flow rate is 11.9 cu m per sec. The river freezes in late October or November, and the ice breaks up in early April or May. The Rezh’s flow is regulated by Lake Aiat’ and a reservoir near the city of Rezh. The Rezh is used for floating timber and as a source of water for industries.
