Play Gauge

Play Gauge

an instrument for determining the play in a steering mechanism as measured at the steering wheel of a motor vehicle. It consists of a sector attached to the steering column and a pointer attached to the rim of the steering wheel. The play is measured on a calibrated scale on the sector. Vehicles with a play of more than 25° are not acceptable for service. In order to obtain objective data the play should be produced by a example, on ZIL or GAZ trucks, about 10 newtons (1 kilogram-force). Combination dynamometer (1 kilogramforce). Combination dynamometer-play gauges exist for measuring steering wheel play, friction in the steering gear, and the condition of individual assemblies upon application of a force of 10 newtons to the wheel rim.
