Revizskaia Dusha

(census soul), persons of the male sex in the population of the Russian Empire in the 18th and 19th centuries. The term was first used with the introduction of the poll tax in 1724. Each revizskaia dusha remained on the census list until the following reviziia (census), even in cases of death; hence the term “dead souls.”
