Straightnose Pipefish

 

(Nerophis ophidian), a fish of the family Syngnathidae. The extremely slender body is up to 29 cm long and is rounded in cross section. The adults lack caudal and pectoral fins. The straightnose pipefish inhabits the Baltic and Black seas. It lives in thickets of aquatic grasses (mainly eelgrass) and algae, and it feeds on plankton. Only the male takes care of the young.
