It began with a small faculty of arts, acquired a new campus in 1855, added faculties of law, medicine, and science in the 1880s and 90s, and continued to expand in the 20th cent. In 1973 the university comprised the faculties of agriculture, architecture, arts, dentistry, economics, law, science, engineering, medicine, and veterinary science. The School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine is affiliated with the university. The university also has an observatory (located in Narrabri) and a library, with 1.7 million volumes. In the 1973–74 academic year, there were 16,600 students and more than 1,000 teachers, including more than 100 professors.
