A large herbivorous prosauropod dinosaur of the genus Plateosaurus of the Triassic Period, having a long neck and tail and a small head with leaf-shaped teeth. [New Latin, genus name : Greek platus, plate-, wide, broad, flat (from the broad, robust nature of the bones of the type specimen ); see plat- in Indo-European roots + Greek sauros, lizard.]
Plateosaurus
Plateosaurus a genus of saurischian dinosaurs of the suborder Prosauropoda. The Plateosaurus lived in the late Triassic. They reached a length of 6 m and had a relatively small, light skull. Their teeth were lanceolate, with more than 30 in the upper jaw and less than 30 in the lower. The Plateosaurus moved on two legs. They fed on plants and possibly on small animals. Skeletons of Plateosaurus have been found in deposits in Western Europe. |
