wagon wheel
Wagon wheelUntil some years into the twentieth century, the outer rim (wagon Tire), and the inner thimble that served as a bushing and turned on the axle were, with the exception of a few rivets and hoops, the only metal in a wagon wheel. Just inside the tire was a segmented ring of wood into which one end of the wooden spokes fitted. Each segment of the ring was called a Felloe, Fellow, or Felly. The other end of the spokes fitted into the hub. The latter was usually made from one carefully seasoned piece of wood bound with iron hoops to keep it from splitting.ThesaurusNoun | 1. | wagon wheel - a wheel of a wagon hoop, ring - a rigid circular band of metal or wood or other material used for holding or fastening or hanging or pulling; "there was still a rusty iron hoop for tying a horse"spoke, wheel spoke, radius - support consisting of a radial member of a wheel joining the hub to the rimwaggon, wagon - any of various kinds of wheeled vehicles drawn by an animal or a tractorwagon tire - a metal hoop forming the tread of a wheelwheel - a simple machine consisting of a circular frame with spokes (or a solid disc) that can rotate on a shaft or axle (as in vehicles or other machines) |
