Thessaly, Plain of
a lowland in Greece, in the southern Balkan Peninsula. Bounded by the Pindus and Othris mountains and the massifs of Ossa and Olympus, the Plain of Thessaly is approximately 80 km long and approximately 60 km wide. It has an elevation of approximately 100 m; the hills and low mountains in the center of the plain reach elevations of 500 m. The plain is primarily composed of alluvial deposits and is drained by the Pinios (Peneus) River. Most of the Plain of Thessaly is cultivated and densely populated.
