Revenue Passenger Miles

Revenue Passenger Miles

A measure of consumer demand for an airline, bus, train, or other form of mass transportation. One calculates revenue seat miles by taking the number of passengers who pay for their seats and multiplying by the number of miles in the trip. Some overnight trips, especially on trains with sleeper cars, use a more complex measure. One excludes employees and others who receive free tickets from the calculation, but usually includes those who pay through a frequent flyer or a similar program. Revenue passenger miles are also called revenue seat miles.
