Established: Authorized on August 17, 1972.
Location:On the northwestern coast of the island of Hawaii, 1 mile south of Kawaihae off HI 270.
Facilities:Rest rooms (é), visitor center (é), self-guided tour/trail.
Activities:Hiking, bird-watching, wildlife viewing, guided tour, cultural demonstrations.
Special Features:Ruins of Puukohola Heiau ("Temple on the Hill of the Whale"), built by King Kamehameha the Great in 1790-1791 during his rise to power, are preserved.
