Vladimir Horse

a breed of draft horses bred in the kolkhozes of lur’ev-Pol’skii and Suzdal’ raions of Vladimir Oblast and Gavrilov Posad Raion of Ivanovo Oblast by crossing the local enlarged coach horse with draft horses (primarily the Clydesdale, Shire, and Suffolk). The breed was recognized in 1946. The Vladimir horse is large and massive, with an elongated body and a wide, deep chest. Its legs are slender and well-placed, with well-formed joints. The coloring is basically bay or dark bay with white markings on the legs and head. The average measurements of stallions and mares are height at the withers, 161 and 157 cm; oblique length of the body, 165 and 163 cm; chest circumference, 196 and 183 cm; and girth of the front cannon bone, 24 and 23 cm. The average stallion weighs 700 kg and the average mare, 550 kg. The Vladimir horse has easy movements at the walk and trot and is capable of much work. Under test conditions, outstanding stallions have been known to pull up to 16-ton loads. The Vladimir breed is used for improving the local horses in many regions of the USSR.
