Schneerson or Schneersohn, Menachem Mendel

(1902–94) rabbi; born in Nikolaev, Russia. Descended from a family of leaders in the Hasidic movement, he studied in Berlin and Paris, and came to the U.S.A. in 1941. He was named the world leader of the Chabad-Lubavitch Movement in 1950. An author on scholarly subjects, he established Lubavitch institutions all over the world and some of the Lubavitch Hasidim came to regard him as virtually the Messiah.
