Planimetric Survey

the construction of a map or plan of a locality showing only its plane (horizontal) features, that is, its outlines and the locations of local objects without reproducing the relief of the area. In such surveying the outlines of each feature and its contents, for example, the usable land and buildings, are depicted. Planimetric surveys are made by angular and linear measurements in the field or by a combination of field and laboratory topographical work using aerial surveys. The scale and techniques of planimetric surveys are determined by the map’s purpose and the assigned area. Planimetric surveying is employed when making maps of land use, forestry maps, navigator’s maps, plan maps of cities, and maps of projected roads.
