Putrescine

(1,4-tetramethylenediamine), NH₂(CH₂)₄NH₂, one of the biogenic amines. Putrescine is a crystalline substance, with a melting point of 27°-28°C. It was first discovered in the products of the putrefactive decomposition of proteins. It is formed during the bacterial decarboxylation of the amino acid ornithine. In organic tissue, putrescine serves as the source compound for the synthesis of the physiologically active poly-amines spermidine and spermine. These substances, together with putrescine, cadaverine, and other diamines, are constituents of ribosomes and help support the ribosome structure.
