The Royal Flush Gang The Royal Flush Gang (pop culture)Each time the players of the card-garbed Royal Flush Gang change hands, the Justice League can bet on raw deal. First seen in Justice League of America #43 (1966), the King of Clubs, Queen of Clubs, Jack of Clubs, and Ten of Clubs are costumed crooks gathered under the leadership of the Ace of Clubs, actually Professor Amos Fortune, a foe of the JLA. Using Fortune's astrological power of “stellaration” to negatively influence the League's luck, this Royal Flush Gang nearly trumps the heroes until JLA mascot Snapper Carr rushes to their aid as a jester-clad “Joker,” helping them shuffle free of the Gang's control. When next seen in issue #54 (1967), the Gang plied bizarre superpowers afforded by newly acquired historical costumes; they later traded Clubs for Spades as their vestmental suit. Ever-evolving rosters of the Royal Flush Gang—each with playing card–inspired weaponry such as explosive Spades and disorienting Diamonds—have appeared over the years, at various times working under the orchestration of Hector Hammond and the Gambler, fighting the Justice League, the Teen Titans, and other heroes. In Superman: The Man of Steel #21 (2002), the Royal Flush Gang expanded into a network of 52 operatives. The Royal Flush Gang has been a favorite of television animators, with different incarnations of the team appearing on Super Powers Team: Galactic Guardians (1986–1987), Batman Beyond (1999–2001), and Justice League (2001–2004). In comics and on TV, the Gang has worked with and against the Clown Prince of Crime, the Joker |
