Artists Artel
Artists’ Artel
(full name, St. Petersburg Artists’ Artel), the first association in Russia of artists of a democratic tendency.
The Artists’ Artel was formed in 1863 by graduates of the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts who left the school in connection with their refusal to create paintings on a single theme for competition (the so-called revolt of the fourteen) and who formed a commune. The artel, led by I. N. Kram-skii, included F. S. Zhuravlev, A. I. Korzukhin, K. V. Lemokh, and A. I. Morozov. It disintegrated in the early 1870’s. Many of its former members became part of the peredvizhnik movement (the Society of Wandering Exhibitions).
