transmissometer[‚tranz·mə′säm·əd·ər] (engineering) An instrument for measuring the extinction coefficient of the atmosphere and for the determination of visual range. Also known as hazemeter; transmittance meter. transmissometerAn apparatus used to determine visibility by measuring the transmission of light through the atmosphere. It is the measurement source for determining runway visual range (RVR) and runway visibility value (RVV). A RVR system consists of a transmissometer projector and a transmissometer receiver. The projector and the receiver are mounted on towers either 250 or 500 ft apart. A known intensity of light is emitted from the projector and is measured by the receiver.
