In south-central LA, west of Lafayette; organized 1886 from Saint Landry Parish. Name Origin: French Acadie, an area in northeastern Canada and ME, former home of present-day Cajuns, descendants of Frence settlers displaced by English troops. Their journey is subject of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's (1807-82) poem, "Evangeline."
