Retezat

a national park in Rumania established in 1935 for the preservation of natural landforms in the Retezat mountain massif in the Southern Carpathians. Area, 13,000 hectares (1975; 1,840 hectares are part of a preserve). There are numerous traces of ancient glaciation (troughs, cirques, glacial lakes). Beech, spruce, and fir forests predominate. Limited grazing of cattle is permitted in some places on the alpine meadows. The park is one of the southern habitats for northern forest-dwelling birds (for example, the hazel hen).
