PixelSense

PixelSense

(1) Microsoft's touchscreen technology that was introduced with its multitouch computer (see definition #2 below).

(2) A multitouch table top computer from Microsoft that incorporates hand gestures and optical recognition of objects placed on the screen. Introduced in 2008 as the Surface computer with a 30" screen, the PixelSense's 40" screen is used without a mouse and keyboard and is large enough for group participation. Subsequent products from Microsoft adopted the Surface brand (see Surface versions). In 2012, Microsoft acquired Perceptive Pixel Inc., the maker of these devices. See multitouch.

An Electronic Light Table
Microsoft's PixelSense includes multitouch along with gesture and optical recognition. In this light table example, photos are being moved around as if they were printed on paper, but can also be resized using hand movements. (Image courtesy of Microsoft Corporation.)
