a material for ceramic articles, similar to porcelain but opaque. It has a dense consistency, almost with out pores, and is usually gray or brown. Articles made of stone-ware clay are usually coated with a transparent crystalline or mat glaze and are often decorated with a fine design in relief. In China stoneware clay appeared before the invention of porcelain; in Europe stoneware clay has been known since the 15th century. After the 1880’s, stoneware clay again began to be used in the production of dishes imitating the styles of the 15th to the 18th centuries. In the 20th century it is used mainly for decorative purposes.
