Dimitrov-Maistora, Vladimir

Born Feb. 1, 1882, in the village of Frolosh, Kiustendil District; died Sept. 29, 1960, in Sofia. Bulgarian painter. People’s Artist of the People’s Republic of Bulgaria (1952). Member of the Bulgarian Communist Party from 1946.

Dimitrov-Maistora studied at an art school in Sofia (1903-10) under I. Myrkvichka. He painted portraits, scenes of peasant festivals, and poetically generalized figures of Bulgarian peasants. In Dimitrov-Maistora’s canvases with their frontal depictions, spread out, as it were, on a flat surface, their generalized manner of painting, and bright colors resonant with contrasts, the traditions of Bulgarian folk art were transformed in a modern, creative manner. His paintings include The Bride, 1935; Family Group, 1938 (both in the National Art Gallery, Sofia); Girl From the Village of Shishkovtsy, 1937 (Kiustendil City Museum); and Girl, 1952 (Art Gallery, Burgas).
