Teatr I Iskusstvo
Teatr I Iskusstvo
(Theater and Art), a Russian illustrated weekly magazine. Teatr i iskusstvo was published in St. Petersburg (Petrograd after 1914) from 1897 to 1918. At first, the editor and publisher was Z. V. Timofeeva (Kholmskaia); with issue no. 35 she remained the publisher, and A. R. Kugel’ became the editor and subsequently, in 1918, the publisher as well. The magazine reported on the activities of St. Petersburg and provincial theaters and provided information on foreign theater. Although it advocated realistic art and opposed decadence and modernism on the stage, it did not immediately appreciate the progressive role of the Moscow Art Theater and for a long time opposed it. Teatr i iskusstvo published a number of supplements, including Biblioteka zhurnala “Teatr i iskusstvo” (The Teatr i iskusstvo Magazine Library), collections of plays, music scores, theatrical memoirs, and Slovar’ stsenicheskikh deiatelei (Dictionary of Stage Personalities), of which 16 issues appeared, up to the letter M.
