Vladimir Belitser

Belitser, Vladimir Aleksandrovich

Born Sept. 17 (30), 1906, in Riazan’. Soviet biochemist; academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR (1957). Graduated from Moscow State University in 1930.

From 1930 to 1944, Belitser was associated with the All-Union Institute for Experimental Medicine and since 1944, with the Institute of Biochemistry of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR. He has studied the mechanism of cellular respiration and the links between the processes of glycolysis and respiration. He introduced the concept of the phosphorylation coefficient—the relationship of the bound phosphate to the absorbed oxygen. He discovered the existence of conjugation between the transfer of electrons in the series of reactions of cellular respiration and the bonding of the phosphate (1937–41). He has studied the denaturizing transformation of proteins, their aggregation, and specific polymerization.
