translating tendency translating tendencyThe tendency of the helicopter to move in the direction of the tail rotor thrust. The side force produced by the tail rotor, unless corrected, results in the helicopter moving sideways on the ground or in hover. The main rotor thrust is offset to produce a side thrust to correct for tail rotor drift. This tendency must be corrected by moving the cyclic to the direction opposite to that of the drift so that the disc tilts slightly to stop the drift. The other methods for correcting tail rotor drift are either to have a tilted mast or to use bias in the cyclic control mechanism. Also known as tail rotor drift |
