Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of the Russian Soviet Federated

The academy was founded by a resolution of the Council of People’s Commissars of the USSR in October 1943 in Moscow under the Ministry of Education of the RSFSR. In 1966 the APN RSFSR had 34 members and 66 corresponding members. Its presidents were V. P. Potemkin (1943–46) and I. A. Kairov (1946–66). The academy’s aims were to develop general and specialized pedagogy, the theory and practice of physical and aesthetic training, and methods of teaching academic subjects in schools providing general education; to work out problems in the history of pedagogy; and to train scholarly pedagogical specialists. The APN RSFSR maintained ten research institutes and a number of laboratories and experimental schools. Between 1945 and 1966 the academy published a series of scholarly journals. In August 1966 it became the Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of the USSR.
