Piteşti (pētĕsht`), city (1990 pop. 174,790), S central Romania, in Walachia, on the Argesul River. It is the administrative and commercial center of the Argeş region and an important rail junction. Piteşti is famous for its wines. The chief manufactures are automobiles, footwear, and wood products. There are several resorts nearby.Piteşti a city in southern Rumania; capital of Argeş District. Population, 74,200 (1970; 110,000 including suburbs). The city is a transportation junction. It has plants that manufacture motor vehicles and electric motors, as well as a wood-products combine, an oil refinery, and a combine that produces petrochemicals. Other enterprises include a packinghouse, a milk plant, a wine and spirits distillery, and a garment factory. The city also has enterprises that produce leather, shoes, textiles, rubber, and building materials. |
