Academy Gymnasium

 

the first secular secondary school in Russia to provide a general education. Founded in St. Petersburg in 1726 under the auspices of the Academy of Sciences. Five-year program of instruction. The basic academic subjects were languages, literature, history, geography, mathematics, and natural science.

M. V. Lomonosov headed the Academy Gymnasium from 1758 to 1765. The textbooks he wrote on grammar, rhetoric, physics, and the history of Russia were important in raising the quality of education at the Academy Gymnasium. It was closed in 1805 as part of the reform of popular education.
