Scaphiopus
Scaphiopus (spadefoots), a genus of toads of the family Pelobatidae. Body length, up to 7.5 cm. They have a “large spadelike protuberance for digging burrows. Seven species are found in North America, living in thickets and on dry prairies. During hot weather the toads dig deep burrows, emerging from them to reproduce only after the first abundant rainfall.
