[′skan·iŋ ¦hēd] (physics) A form of HEED in which the diffracted electrons are directly measured electronically with a sensitive detector, and the diffraction pattern is recorded either by moving the detector across it or by deflecting the diffracted electrons across a stationary detector. Abbreviated SHEED.
