Pitcairn

 

an island in the South Pacific Ocean, in Polynesia. Part of a British possession that also includes the uninhabited islands of Oeno, Ducie, and Henderson. Area, 4.5 sq km. Population, 91 (1971). Adamstown is the only settlement. The island is volcanic in origin and rises to a maximum height of 335 m. Maize, taro, vegetables, and fruits are cultivated. The island was discovered in 1767 by the British expedition of P. Carteret and named after the sailor who first sighted it.
