Piston Ringpiston ring[′pis·tən ‚riŋ]Piston Ringa split, springy metal ring installed in the groove of a piston. The piston ring presses against the cylinder wall of a reciprocating engine as a result of its own tension or under pressure from a flat, steel spring. Piston rings may be of the compression type or oil-scraper type. Compression rings seal the gap between the piston and the cylinder and conduct heat from the piston; oil-scraper rings remove excess oil from the working surface. Piston rings are usually made of high-quality gray iron. Bronze piston rings are sometimes used in pumps. piston ring
