Uglich Reservoir

a reservoir formed by the dam of the Uglich Hydroelectric Power Plant on the Volga River, in Yaroslavl and Kalinin oblasts, RSFSR. The Uglich Reservoir has an area of 249 sq km, a volume of 1.2 cu km, a length of 143 km, a maximum width of 5 km, an average depth of 5 m, and a maximum depth of 23 m. The water level varies within a range of 5.5 m; the reservoir affects seasonal regulation of the flow of water. The reservoir was created in 1940 to provide electric power and to facilitate navigation; it is also used for water supply and for fishing. The cities of Uglich, Kaliazin, and Kimry are situated on its banks.
