Sibai, Yusuf

 

Born June 10, 1917, in Cairo. Arab writer; Egyptian public figure.

Sibai received an advanced military education. In 1958 he became general secretary of the Afro-Asian People’s Solidarity Organization as well as of the permanent office of the Association of Writers of the Asian and African Countries. He heads the Egyptian Union of Writers; in 1973 he was made minister of culture of the Arab Republic of Egypt. He is editor in chief of thejournal Lotus.

Sibai began publishing in 1947, when his collection of short stories Ghosts and novel The Governor of Israel appeared. He has written approximately 50 books dealing with contemporary life, including the collection of critical articles Blows and Kisses (1959) and the novels We Are Not Alone (1969) and Life Is a Moment (1973). His play Stronger Than Time (1966) was inspired by the construction of the Aswan High Dam. Several of Sibai’s novels and plays have been made into movies or translated into foreign languages. Sibai has been awarded the Joli-ot-Curie Gold Medal for Peace (1960) and the Lotus Prize (1974).
