Pi Sheng

Pi Sheng

Chinese artisan who initiated book printing with movable letters.

Pi Sheng’s invention dates from 1041–48. Printing elements (hieroglyphs) of baked clay were fixed in iron typesetting forms by means of a resinous mixture that hardened upon cooling. The text was printed on paper after the letters were covered with india ink.
