piriformis tightness test

A clinical test used to identify piriformis tightness and pinching of sciatic nerve (manifest as buttock pain and/or sciatica).
Technique
The patient begins lying on his or her side, with the test leg facing up and flexed at the hip to 60º; the knee is also flexed. The examiner stabilises the hip with one hand and applies downward pressure on the knee.
Positive test
Piriformis muscle pain implies piriformis tightness; buttock pain and sciatica imply piriformis muscle pinching the sciatic nerve.
